Improving visual communications has been a part of the AVI-SPL mission from its beginnings in 1979, when a small company called Audio Visual Innovations started selling Kroy Lettering Machines from founder Martin Schaffel’s apartment. Back then, the lettering machine was a sophisticated tool that created effective and efficient communications for architecture and engineering firms. It was also a symbol of the spirit that defines our company. From the lettering machine, we built up the breadth and depth of our expertise, moving to LCD panels for overhead projectors, then to digital projectors, automated meeting environments, video conferencing and now high-end 3D video walls. Audio Visual Innovations started in 1979 with a mission to improve visual communications by providing the tools and services that would make sharing ideas and connecting audiences simpler and more effective. From a single product and a single office, the vision developed into a the largest Pro AV integration firm in the U.S.
In 1992, Chad Gillenwater, William Parry and Fred Curdts began Signal Perfection Limited, a company that would rise as the nation’s preeminent large-venue integrator. Four years after Chad was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004, he and Martin, visionary leaders of their respective companies, would join forces to become AVI-SPL, in a merger made possible by high-tech, private equity firm Silver Lake Sumeru.
Merging Audio Visual Innovations with Signal Perfection Limited in 2008 did more than bring together the top two companies in the Pro AV industry. It marked a change in the level of service that organizations should expect from their video communications technology integrator. That first year, we were ranked the number one integration company in the industry, and have been every year since.
